Artistic Director |
|
After performing most of the principal patter roles for SLOCO over a span of 25 years, Thom Griffin was named as our new Artistic Director in 2007. Thom has performed in countless ensembles throughout New England. After starting in straight theatre at Hartford’s Protean Theatre in the 1970’s, he moved on to his main delight which is music. His first major role with SLOCO was as Ko-Ko in our 1983 production of The Mikado. Not long after that, he began a long association with Opera North in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he sang such roles as Benoit/Alcindoro in La Boheme, and Dr. Grenvil in La Traviata. These performances led to further work at Opera New England of Boston. Thom was most recently seen in the role of Count Ceprano in the 2007 Commonwealth Opera production of Rigoletto. Concurrent with his directing of this show, he is acting in two Commonwealth Opera productions. He has the title role in Brundibar, the Czech Children’s Opera. And in May he will be seen as the Innkeeper in Man of La Manchia. His directing credits include several Gilbert & Sullivan operettas with Valley Light Opera, of Amherst, Massachusetts. Notes from our Artistic Director … "Gilbert & Sullivan purists will note that I have chosen to perform the 1907 edition of Gilbert’s libretto, which had many cuts in dialogue. I have made a good many additional cuts (much to the horror of several cast members) as well as some of the music. We shall see…" "I must repeat my invitation of last year to anyone wishing to sing with our troupe. Our auditions are non-threatening. We thoroughly enjoy singing and performing together and helping our audiences suspend their disbelief for an evening. For those of you talented in other ways, we can always utilize your skills in set design, building construction, costume design, sewing, and marketing our fine organization. Enjoy the show!" Please support these and other fine arts organizations. The thriving arts community in the Hartford area contributes greatly to the fine quality of life which we enjoy here. These are tying times as grant funding is harder to find. Please help us continue our tradition of bringing light opera to the Great Hartford area. |
