Simsbury Light Opera selects director for “Patience”

Renee Haines of Southington has been selected as artistic director for the Simsbury Light Opera Company’s 2019 production, Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Patience,” the company announced.

Haines is a Simsbury Light Opera (SLOCO) veteran who has played principal roles in nearly all the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. In 2016 she played Aline in SLOCO’s “The Sorcerer.” Currently she is cast as Yum-Yum in “The Mikado” with Connecticut Gilbert & Sullivan Society. She is also a former president of Connecticut Gilbert & Sullivan.

“Patience” will mark Haines’s first time in the director’s chair, but returning to SLOCO “feels like coming home again,” Haines said. “It will be an honor to lead this talented group of people with such a long history of excellence in the performing arts.”
Haines is an honors graduate of the Hartt School of Music with a Bachelors of Music degree in Opera Performance. She said she looks forward to directing a show that is less familiar to the public than, say, “The Mikado.”

“Patience is a satirical operetta that is rich with beautiful music and displays tremendous humor that we can all identify with,” she said. “We have all idealized something in our lives at one time or another, only to discover later the reality of it. That is behind much of the humor in this show.”

“Patience” will be performed in Simsbury in spring 2019. Auditions will be held October 28 and 30 and will be open to the public. More information is available at www.sloco.org or on SLOCO’s Facebook page.

The Simsbury Light Opera Company, established in 1945, is the oldest active amateur theater company in Connecticut and one of the oldest Gilbert & Sullivan companies in the United States.
